Reaching to Claim

The words 'I am' are potent words; be careful what you hitch them to. The thing you're claiming has a way of reaching back and claiming you. - A.L. Kitselman

I was reading something the other day about how much easier it is to believe the negative about yourself than the positive. I wondered why that might be true and came up with this:

- Negative statements are sometimes doubts we posses that when said out loud become reinforced deep inside ourselves

- Negative thoughts are most often repeated over and over again until we are brainwashed to believe them

- Negative names (I am stupid/lazy/fat/a failure) are sometimes stated to lighten a situation when something hasn't quite worked out as planned. In reality, when we call ourselves negative names we end up reinforcing our mistakes and beating ourselves over our own heads. I think that may prevent us from succeeding or at the least, trying again.

I'm guessing every one of us makes mistakes. I would also venture that every one of us could stand to make an improvement or two within our own beings/lives. I don't think we stand much of a chance if we continue to think and talk about ourselves in negative terms.

I'm challenging every one of us to notice how we talk to ourselves. Try and turn those negatives into positives. Give yourself a break - I bet you are really much better off than you give yourself credit for.

  1. Attitude is everything. But what I'm finding is that what's true about me is not what I believe is true... it's what God knows is true about me.

Very nice photo, Stacey! I like the colors and the softness.
