There is in us a lyric germ or nucleus which deserves respect; it bids a man to ponder or create; and in this dim corner of himself he can take refuge and find consolations which the society of his fellow creatures does not provide. - George Norman Douglas quotes (Finnish Composer, 1865-1957)

My neighbor that I've been caring for is experiencing more pain from spreading cancer and from pneumonia.
He told me that he thinks his time on earth is about up, which deeply saddens me.

As I work in his house (sorting through papers and throwing out trash), a lump caught in my throat.  I have realized that by reaching out to help him, he has been of great help to me.

I've heard it said that by helping others you in turn help yourself.  I never really understood that until the other day when I felt the shift in my heart.... the pang of knowing he may soon die and leave my world.  I have grown to care for this man very much.  I can't begin to explain how much I appreciate him for allowing me in his life. Because, in doing so, he has given me opportunities to learn, grow, risk, and change in new ways.

I know this situation was brought about by God...something I'll always be grateful for.

  1. It's quite something how we can just KNOW that certain people have been sent to us by God. And not just for the learning but for the emotional experience. To make us wiser, more tender hearted, more aware...I know your heart is breaking, yet you are so special and beloved by God for what you are doing. More than you will EVER know. Nothing we ever do for God is forgotten. "Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth...but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you." Isaiah 60
