Going Backwards

Optimist: someone who figures that taking a step backward after taking a step forward is not a disaster, it's a cha-cha- Robert Brault, www.robertbrault.com

Today's Five Minute Friday topic is Backwards. So, without editing my thoughts - here I go!

The word "backwards" conjures up images in my mind of children walking backwards, heads cranked all the way around to the back, arms flailing, mouths open in laughter...

I then imagine little rear ends falling to the floor in heaps while tears from their eyes flow as hard as the laughter from between their lips.

Going backwards also makes me think of my own healing from my past. On some days I move forward but on others it's definitely a backwards step.

I guess you might say it's the proverbial, "One step forward, two steps backward" kind of thing.

For some reason though, that works - the going backward to moving forward.

You've got to face your past. You have to face your mistakes. You need to look directly at the pain and acknowledge it, address it and make peace with it before you can move to a happier, freer future.

It's not easy. Oh my goodness is it not easy. Sometimes the "backwards" motion makes the ground come up and smack me in the face. Yet, at other times, it helps me refresh and to stop and notice where I've been and how far I've come.

Backwards is not a bad thing. It can be fun if you are a kid playing around (a big or little kid). It can be healing to glance backward and notice all the progress you've made. And yes, it can be scary at times - but oh so worth it!

Wow - that was a fast five minutes for me!

  1. and you forgot you are going backwards to get your old post back and moving them forward.

  2. This is so true, although we have to be careful not spending so much time looking back that we don't see where we're going!
